Weekly newspapers look for new revenue in big campaign year
The state’s weekly newspapers have a new plan for making money from politics. The Washington Newspaper Publisher’s Association, which represents weekly and community papers, is building a Web site to compile state political news in the hope of selling politicians their names. WNPA President Bill Marcum said in this month’s newsletter put out by his group and Allied Daily Newspapers, representing the dailies:

Drudge keeps campaigns guessing
May 19 was a fairly typical day in the recent life of the Drudge Report. There was a breathtaking picture of Sen. Barack Obama’s rally in Portland, Ore., framed by the words “AS FAR AS CAMERA'S EYE CAN SEE … THE OBAMA MASS.” And there was thinly veiled mockery of two other candidates: “Clinton Sits Through Sermon About Adultery,” was one headline. “State GOP chair: McCain ‘kind of like Jesus,’” was another, closely followed by “McCain’s national finance co-chair exits over lobbyist ties …”

Where the smart money in this election
The primary season will be remembered for many things, including the drawn-out Democratic contest, John McCain’s surprising comeback, and the number of presidential hopefuls appearing on “Saturday Night Live.” But among media people what stands out is the huge amount of ad spending. It was the most expensive primary season ever, owing partly to the down-to-the-wire fight between Democrats Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, the eventual winner.

Web is choice over sound bites
NEW YORK — Americans dissatisfied with political sound bites are turning to the Internet for a more complete picture, a new study finds. In a report Sunday, the Pew Internet and American Life Project said that nearly 30 percent of adults have used the Internet to read or watch unfiltered campaign material — footage of debates, position papers, announcements and transcripts of speeches.
